NMMU Golden Key Lecturer of the Year Awards

The Golden Key lecturer of the year event is an annual initiative aimed at rewarding excellence and hard work at NMMU. Excellence is one of the values we share at Golden Key and coincidentally the university as well. Therefore, to reinforce this value amongst the academic staff, saw the birth of this event. As the famous Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle said “We are what we repeatedly do, excellence, then, is not an act but a habit”, we aim at reward excellence wherever it is evident to foster such traits to ensure excellence in every avenue.

The year’s event was held on Thursday the 18th of August in Madibaz Fine Dining at South Campus. The event was a great success thanks to the hard work behind it. It was well supported by campus officials although it coincided with a staff member’s memorial service. Three deans were present out of the seven of which the others sent their apologies. Six honorary members supported the event and about ten campus officials including the award recipients.

The event was set on course by Gerald Chikosi who gave the introductory speech and Bekezela Mephumangogaja gave the bigger picture of what Golden Key is all about through his presentation. The Dean of the Law Faculty also our honorary member, Prof Vivienne Lawack-Davids gave the key address. Dr. Jooste and Prof van Loggerenberg the chapter advisors, conducted the recognition of the lecturers and Divinia Pillay, our new advisor dropped the curtain with the vote of thanks.

The committee was hailed for their great effort in organising their first event which was very successful and for having well marketed the event which saw an increase of almost 50% in the number of voters. The winners for this year’s event were:

UCT GK - Red Cross Community Development Project

University of Cape Town Golden Key Chapter has established a volunteering-partnership with ‘The Friends of the Children's Hospital Association’ at Red Cross. The project at the hospital provides love and comfort to the children and the parents at the hospital. They provide food and clothes to the children and parents and also do small projects on handy work to keep the parents busy. Moreover, they hold support groups for the parents so as to provide emotional support.

The UCT Golden Key members are involved in the play programme run by The Friends and are actively involved in the initiatives to provide love and comfort (emotional healing) to the children through the play program. GK volunteers play with the children at the hospital, read stories to them, help them with homework and so forth. This is the beginning of a long term community development project with Red Cross.  They also held a clothing donation for the initiative. The chapter had a training day at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital on the 6thof August 2011 with The Friends of the Children’s Hospital Association. The training was an orientation for the GK volunteers. Avril (who works for the association) created awareness about some of the things that volunteers maybe subjected to such as death of a patient in their presence and spoke about the support that the association has to offer in such cases. Overall, it was a successful event and volunteers felt prepared for the project.

‘A Day in the Life of a consultant’ and CV Writing Workshop

The Golden Key Stellenbosch Chapter hosted a three-tier event together with McKinsey and Company on Thursday evening, the 4thof August. It entailed one of the consultants, Felix Faulhaber, of McKinsey and Company drafting to everyone what “A Day in the Life of a consultant” is like. McKinsey and Company is a global management consulting firm, who are the trusted advisor to the world's leading businesses, governments, and institutions. The second tier of the evening involved Ingrid Hamman presenting a short CV Writing Workshop in which she explained the importance of a knock-out CV when applying anywhere, especially to this dynamic firm. The last tier of the three-tier evening involved delicious, free finger food as well as non-alcoholic drinks for everyone who attended, which was a perfect ending to a great evening.

Despite the tempestuous weather, the evening was a great success with 67 students and even some young professionals from Stellenbosch attending the workshop. The positive responses the GK committee received were overwhelming, with members keen for more workshops to help them unlock their full potential!

SOS Children’s Village Holiday Club

The Golden Key Pietermaritzburg Chapter visited the SOS Children’s Village over the holidays. The village is home to children from a diverse range of backgrounds and circumstances, aged from 2 to 22 years old.  During school holidays many of the children are left with no option but to stay at the village and a holiday club is therefore organised to occupy and entertain them.  Golden Key’s involvement with this program was diverse and enriching.  They invited Louise Win, a local pottery teacher, who facilitated lessons with the children for a whole day.  The children were encouraged to play with clay, creating sculptures and having fun whilst at the same time gaining important tactile and muscle coordination skills.

The volunteers also participated as judges for the children’s talent show, a lively and joyous event that went a long way in boosting confidence and rewarding creativity and courage.  They also had one of our members (Bongi) run a ‘chat room’ over two days, sitting down with the children and being an objective outside voice for the children who often feel that they cannot share worries or questions with their house mothers.  Bongi is a Masters student in psychology, and therefore had a good opportunity to skillfully put her counseling training into practice.

They began a project which saw us repainting the village library, a project that is still underway.  Our vision is to not only repaint the book library, but also the toy library next door, and to begin to encourage creative and imaginative play in the village, instilling a love of reading and creating in the children. We hope that this is the start of a long and rewarding relationship between SOS and Golden Key.

Golden Key Wits Chapter High Tea

Ladies dressed to the eights, nines and tens along with their elegant hats to match. This is simply a brief description of how beautiful the ladies looked at the women’s high tea event hosted by the Wits Golden Key Chapter.

The event, being the first of its kind for the Chapter, was themed “Hear my voice, see my life, know my story.” There was even a dress code which went by the title “Smart with a hat,” the ladies adhered to this in true style. It was the key note speaker, Media Mogul and host of the TV show Motswako, Ms Penny Lebyane, who captivated the audience with her story. As a leading lady in the South African media industry, she had lots to share about her personal experiences.

Ms Lebyane encouraged our guests to rise above their circumstances with her childhood story and offered words of wisdom in her speech titled ‘I fly because I have wings’ urging young ladies and gentlemen alike to strive for their goals and stay focused. She also related to the young women as their ‘older sister’ when she gave guidance and advice during the question and answer session.

Ms Sade Giliberti, a young and accomplished TV personality shared her experiences and her recitation of a portion Maya Angelou’s ‘Phenomenal Woman’ captured the essence of the event. She was not only a charming master of ceremonies, she too gave a touching personal account of her life story. This of course revealed a side to her which was not seen during her presenting days on the small screen. The interaction with the audience from both women was in perfect unison. The generation gap had been filled with laughs, thoughts and some tears. As the topics ranged from academics, boys, life after university and the roles women play in each other‘s lives.

On a lighter note, the entertainment was in the form of smartly dressed males. Amo Manganyi, a Wits Golden Key member himself, shared a soulful poem in tribute to the ladies. His words certainly resonated with the ladies. It was the male a cappella group, Ocean Acoustics, which had the ladies dancing on their heels. The networking was abuzz as students interacted with staff from the SDLU (Student Development Leadership Unit), Wits marketing and the Vuvuzela newspaper.

Also in attendance, were Golden Key honorary member Professor Katherine Munro and Ms Hope Khoza from Golden Key South Africa.  Our hats must be taken off to the Wits Golden Key executive committee and their chapter advisor, Mrs Lamese Abrahams along with her team at the SDLU for organising the event. It certainly proved to be a success as ladies left with some gifts of appreciation for their attendance.

The high tea also created a platform for a much needed and appreciated intergenerational conversation amongst the women of our country. I believe that this event is the catalyst of many more tea parties to come with conversations of substance and none of the gossip of old-fashioned tea parties. So raise your tea cups to the next generation of contemporary tea parties with added value.
