Maximiser, Activator, Communication, Connectedness, Input. Those were my 5 strengths according to www.strengthsfinder.com. If you haven’t already, go and buy ‘Now discover your strengths’ by Marcus Buckingham and get STUCK IN! On the inside sleeve there is a code which allows you to do the online questionnaire. Then your strengths are revealed!
Why do I want to know my strengths? I listened to Buckingham at the conference in London last year. What struck me is that the percentage of people who actually play to their strengths most of the time came in at 12%[1]! The rest seemed to think that fixing weaknesses is the path to success. And they could not be more wrong.

Golden Key is pleased to announce a monthly column by Travis Gale – an Associate of appletree and a Golden Key Honorary Member.
Travis Gale has involved himself in leadership and development processes since he was a teenager.
After finishing high school he embarked on an “around-the-world” bicycle trip covering over 16 000 kilometers and succeeded in raising R1.7m for children living with HIV/AIDS in KwaZulu-Natal. For this he was awarded a North Local Council Mayoral Award for Community Development.
Travis has been an active speaker on his experiences and continues to seek out opportunities to challenge his community to step out their comfort zones. The Durban Umgeni Rotary Club acknowledged this by presenting Travis with a Merit Award for “Devoted and Unselfish Service Above Self” to the community.

The Rugby World Cup gave us plenty of time to hear our National Anthem being sung, and a host of other ones to. Of course only one came out tops!! The victory was awesome. I went down to watch the Boys in Green do their drive around town on a double-decker bus. South Africans, of all colours and religions, were out with vuvuzela’s and positive attitudes. One nation – at least for that hour. |

So it’s the 24th of October… I am in a bit of a ‘dwaal’ tonight as I write this and also have the fact that I am meant to have these articles in by the 17th looming in my mind! Reason for my delay (alongside the poor planning part…) is that I spent the weekend up in JHB watching the Bokke take the English (yes please!!!) and then at a retreat for three days with apple tree. Our retreat takes place annually and it’s where we get to re-evaluate our individual and collective values, purpose and vision. It is always an exciting time as you reflect on your life, where you have come from and where you are going. It is even more exciting when you get to be part of a team who works together to make something happen, pushing through hard times and celebrating the highs together. |

Last night I was captivated.
At 17h37 I received a call from a good friend of mine, Budgie (think I may have spoken about him in previous articles). “I have two tickets to the premier of ‘The Alps’ at IMAX,” he said. This is my cup of tea, and on top of it I would get to meet some new people including Sean Wisedale - the first African to summit the 7 peaks! |
