The Golden Key lecturer of the year event is an annual initiative aimed at rewarding excellence and hard work at NMMU. Excellence is one of the values we share at Golden Key and coincidentally the university as well. Therefore, to reinforce this value amongst the academic staff, saw the birth of this event. As the famous Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle said “We are what we repeatedly do, excellence, then, is not an act but a habit”, we aim at reward excellence wherever it is evident to foster such traits to ensure excellence in every avenue.
The year’s event was held on Thursday the 18th of August in Madibaz Fine Dining at South Campus. The event was a great success thanks to the hard work behind it. It was well supported by campus officials although it coincided with a staff member’s memorial service. Three deans were present out of the seven of which the others sent their apologies. Six honorary members supported the event and about ten campus officials including the award recipients.
The event was set on course by Gerald Chikosi who gave the introductory speech and Bekezela Mephumangogaja gave the bigger picture of what Golden Key is all about through his presentation. The Dean of the Law Faculty also our honorary member, Prof Vivienne Lawack-Davids gave the key address. Dr. Jooste and Prof van Loggerenberg the chapter advisors, conducted the recognition of the lecturers and Divinia Pillay, our new advisor dropped the curtain with the vote of thanks.
The committee was hailed for their great effort in organising their first event which was very successful and for having well marketed the event which saw an increase of almost 50% in the number of voters. The winners for this year’s event were:

“There are a range of topics that continue to occupy my thoughts after the ISLP experience. I feel the ISLP delegation on engineering broadened my horizons on a professional and personal level. This experience provided me with memories that I will be able to think back on for as long as I have a healthy mind! My wish is that more students may have the opportunity to experience such a wonderful time as I did. I want to thank Sasol Mining, my bursar, for providing me with funds to attend the ISLP delegation to China. Thank you Golden Key for informing me about this great program!”
